![]() ![]() Visitor Comment Dear Lynne, I visited your school on Wednesday morning with my daughter and granddaughter and just wanted to tell you how blown away I was by your school! I just loved the peaceful, warm friendly atmosphere and was so impressed by the pupils remaining on task even with a large group of adults invading their classroom. It is just one of the many unique ways that we underpin children’s development at West Rise Community Infant School. We believe this philosophy is vital to our work and is one of the golden threads of personal development and growth for children and staff at West Rise. ![]() This is underpinned and fully supported by Wellbeing First curriculum. After a Mindful moment I feel powerful, confident, calm and strong. My Amygdala was going crazy so I sat there, calmed my brain and had a little think about it. When it was dance club I was worried because I hadn’t done it before and thought I couldn’t do it. On Orange table when people were not being nice I remembered what we said and just took deep breaths and carried on with my work. The MindUP programme has already had significant impact on children’s social and emotional competence and self confidence as well as enabling increased focus and attention to learning. MindUP lessons align with all national standards including National Curriculum and support improved academic performance, while enhancing perspective taking, empathy and kindness, optimism and gratitude, as well as fostering complex problem solving skills. Students learn to self-regulate behaviour and mindfully engage in focused concentration required for academic success. This programme is composed of 15 lessons based in neuroscience. MindUP is research based training programme for educators and children. MindUP teaches social and emotional learning skills that link cognitive neuroscience, positive psychology and mindful awareness training in a brain centric approach. Students will be challenged to identify the three helpers.We are very proud and privileged to be a MindUP school – the first in Sussex! Grades PreK–2 shows the three big helpers in the brain. Getting to Know and Love Your Brain: Full colour Posters: Each of the three books comes with an age-appropriate colourful poster with fascinating facts about the brain. (See Lesson 3, page 42, for a complete overview of the Core Practice.) ![]() The Core Practice makes mindful attention the foundation for learning and interacting ideally, it is repeated for a few moments of each school day throughout the year. The essential work of MindUP is accomplished through the lessons themselves, which include the repetition of the Core Practice-deep belly breathing and attentive listening. Over the course of the MindUP experience, children learn about the brain and how it functions, in the process gaining insight into their own minds and behaviours as well as those of the people around them. MindUP’s expansive dynamic is built to a large extent on routine practices that are inherent to the MindUP Curriculum. The MindUP classroom is an optimistic classroom that promotes and develops mindful attention to oneself and others, tolerance of differences, and the capacity of each member of the community to grow as a human being and a learner. MindUP is a comprehensive, classroom-tested, evidence-based curriculum framed around 15 easily implemented lessons that foster social and emotional awareness, enhance psychological well-being, and promote academic success.
